The Hawks’ search for a second import to go with Melvin Thomas at the beginning of ’92 dragged on through the entire pre-season before coach Dave Lindstrom stumbled across the prodigious Overton.
The 185cm point guard had been drafted into the NBA but was told to play overseas for a season and try his luck the following year.
His one and only season with the Hawks was a weekly highlight reel, with Overton leading his side into the play-offs after averaging 24 points, 6.2 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals. After being selected in the All-NBL’s first team, Overton headed back to the US and played 11 seasons in the NBA..
In the three seasons from 1986-88, the Hawks boasted one of the NBL’s best playing rosters. Spearheading that cast was the intimidating frontline of Ray Borner, Jim Bateman and Don Bickett - aka The Killer Bs.
