The Hawks’ search for a second import to go with Melvin Thomas at the beginning of ’92 dragged on through the entire pre-season before coach Dave Lindstrom stumbled across the prodigious Overton.
The 185cm point guard had been drafted into the NBA but was told to play overseas for a season and try his luck the following year.
His one and only season with the Hawks was a weekly highlight reel, with Overton leading his side into the play-offs after averaging 24 points, 6.2 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals. After being selected in the All-NBL’s first team, Overton headed back to the US and played 11 seasons in the NBA..
"Sav" owns just about every Hawks record after 15 seasons with the club. He rose all the way to the top, leading Wollongong to their one and only NBL title in ‘01 and representing Australia at the Athens and Beijing Olympics.
