The Hawks pulled off their greatest coup at the time by signing the 1985 NBL MVP from Coburg. The starting centre with the Australian Boomers.

Borner became part of the Hawks aptly named Killer Bs frontline with American Forwards Jim Bateman and Don Bikcett.

He was dominant in both the high and low posts, a poerful rebounder and a nasty defender.
