Geoff Phillips - Court Announcer / Fan
One of my favourite moments in Hawks history took place in 1989 at The Snakepit. It was the clash between the Hawks and Hobart's Tassie Devils.
As was my custom those days as court announcer, I would stand centre court to introduce both teams, with the visiting team called first in ascending number order. This was to be one of the best sporting moments of my life.
After many years of dedicated service to the Hawks and being one of the club's greatest and most popular players, current coach, Gordie McLeod, played a farewell season with Hobart, a decision which brought him back to play his last game at the beloved Snakepit.
"Introducing the visitors, the Hobart Tassie Devils." I said. "No 4, Gordie McLeod."
As Gordie ran out to take his position on the court, it was as if a spell had been cast upon the crowd. As one, 2500 people rose to their feet and began clapping, cheering and roaring approval for the decade of effort and sacrifice of their favourite "son".
This spontaneous eruption of emotion continued for more than a minute. A legend held centre court while the faithful willingly paid their adulation.
I remember looking at Gordie and he was looking at me, silently imploring me to introduce the next player.
Not a chance!
The fans were saying "thank you" as only they know how. It was a wonderful gesture by basketball followers and one that raised the hair on the back of my neck.
Looking back now, I can't really see any other crowd in the NBL giving a standing ovation to a player from the other team.
I was proud of our Wollongong fans that night, they showed respect for a truly great player and respect for a truly great sport .
I remain proud of our fans to this day.
